AMA again seeks to create a monopoly

AMA to"Thwart" Other Professions' Scope Expansion, and a Challenge to CAM-IM Fields

The American Medical Association has engaged a formal effort to stop allied health professions, including CAM disciplines, from expanding their scopes of practice. Top targets appear to be psychologists and nurse anesthesiologists, according to an American Medical News story (May 13, 2006) cited in an AMA backgrounder on the issue. The "partial list of legislative initiatives shows that bills of chiropractors, midwives and naturopathic doctors are also clearly in their sights.

AMA Announces Creation of the Scope of Practice Partnership
The AMA announced at its recent House of Delegates meeting the creation of the Scope of Practice Partnership (SPP). The SPP will work with specialty medical societies and state medical societies to ensure that patient quality of care is not sacrificed through legislated scope expansion for non-physicians. “With this partnership, the house of medicine has recognized that legislated scope expansion for allied health practitioners without the necessary education and clinical training is not just a threat to the delivery of quality patient eye care, but is also a threat to patient quality of care across the spectrum of medicine,” said H. Dunbar Hoskins, the Academy’s executive vice president.
